This book presents 12 visual thinking tools (e.g., a cycle diagram, a flowchart, a matrix or some other graphical display). These are tools that knowledge workers can use to examine, understand and intervene in the situations they encounter in the workplace. Chapter 1 presents one-page versions of all 12 tools. Each of these one-page versions presents the visual tool and some brief accompanying text. Subsequent chapters examine each of the 12 tools in more detail, including explanations of how to use the tool and examples where it has been used. In some cases, checklists and diagnostic questions are included. These are real examples, not fictional accounts. I have used them all to good effect and on more than one occasion.
Tools for Knowledge Workers eBook Fred Nickols
I have found this book to be a very interesting read given that I am a visually oriented person. When presented with problems in the workplace I tend to draw a chart or diagram in order to get at the root of a problem and its subsequent solution. So I was particularly pleased with the overall presentation in this book. The author uses easy to read diagrams to introduce the premise of each tool. Very clear writing giving a detailed description of the proper application of the tool follows this. I found particular value from the Change Acceptance Cycle tool, as my organization has been going through many changes in the past several years. In the end this book provides us with a jolt of common sense we can all use from time to time. I give Tools for Knowledge Workers my recommendation.Product details

Tools for Knowledge Workers eBook Fred Nickols Reviews
This is a great book by organizational efficiency expert Fred Nickols, who I have known on the Organization Development Network online community of practice for many years (ODNET). The -based Toolkit is suitable for managers and anyone doing formal or informal consultation with stakeholders or up or down the organizational hierarchy.
The Toolkit provides 12 Visual tools divided into three categories tactical management, problem solving, strategic thinking. Each tool is presented as a visual one-page, which allows you to apply the tool quickly. For each tool there is also a longer explanation for those who want to explore further. Each tool is separate and not dependent on anything else, so the "book" can be flipped through quickly. I really like how Fred chunks down important information and sets a path forward. Fred's models have the affect of "emancipating the imagination", unlocking brain freeze, the distress response, that sometimes appears with new challenges that need to be delivered on quickly.
Are you about to make a change in your organization? Consult Fred's "Change Acceptance Cycle" to anticipate what your staff will go through and learn how to intervene before any pushback starts to slow down efficiency and makes the situation costly. Do you need to get clear on some goals and prioritize them for an upcoming meeting? Then check out The Urgent vs. Important Matrix and/or The Goals Grid and go to work quickly. Got an organizational or operations problem to sort out? Use the game-like Problem Solving Bases to get a result quickly.
These tools can also be used for team brainstorming or team cluster meetings to stimulate input from team members; each team member calls up the specified the Knowledge Worker Tool on a or Ipad and works with two others. All then return to the meeting with new ideas, which are then explored and prioritized. This can also be done online using the or Ipad . I keep mine with me on my Ipad, with my "most important books to consult".
This is a wonderful resource.
The models are unique. They provide great viewpoints on complex organizational aspects.
The visuals tell much at a glance. And the models are so eloquent that they are immediately accessible for application.
